Aujourd’hui, nous vous annonçons la signature d’un troisième pilote, cette fois-ci pour la DBR9 n°10 : le Monégasque Clivio Piccione. Voici un rappel de son palmarès, suivi d’une interview de cette nouvelle recrue :

Comment s’est passée la signature avec HEXIS AMR ?

J’ai rencontré Philippe Dumas (Cogérant et team manager d’HEXIS AMR) lorsque nous avons entendu parler du projet du Championnat du Monde FIA GT1 il y a quelques mois. Nous avions alors l’idée de monter une structure commune, avec HEXIS AMR et Team Monaco (team de Clivio Piccione). Malheureusement, Team Monaco n’a pas pu rassembler les moyens financiers suffisants pour pouvoir participer à ce nouveau championnat, et notre projet est tombé à l’eau. Malgré tout, j’ai gardé de bonnes relations avec Philippe, et j’ai manifesté mon souhait de rejoindre la structure d’HEXIS AMR. Nous nous sommes tenus au courant au fil des semaines …

Vous avez uniquement piloté des monoplaces jusqu’à présent …

Oui, conduire une GT est une première pour moi ! Cette signature est un grand virage et symbolise un challenge à relever. Mais je suis serein, il y a une bonne entente avec HEXIS AMR, je leur fais confiance et ils me font confiance. J’ai eu l’occasion de rencontrer toute l’équipe lors d’une journée d’essais à Lédenon (circuit où est basé HEXIS AMR), et j’ai visité leur structure. Je me suis également rendu aux journées tests sur le circuit Paul Ricard pour voir rouler la GT1 d’HEXIS AMR. Aujourd’hui, je suis vraiment fier de faire partie de l’équipe !

Quel regard portez-vous sur ce nouveau Championnat du Monde GT1 ?

Je pense que ce championnat a un bel avenir et qu’il  va très certainement devenir la catégorie reine des GT dans les prochaines années. Et je mise beaucoup sur la réussite d’HEXIS AMR !

How did the signature with HEXIS AMR go?

I met Philippe Dumas (co-owner and team manager of HEXIS AMR) when we heard about the FIA GT1 World Championship a few months ago. We then had in mind to create a common structure to HEXIS AMR and Team Monaco (Clivio Piccione’s team). Unfortunately, Team Monaco couldn’t gather enough financial means to take part in this new championship, and our project fell through. Despite everything, I kept good relations with Philippe, and I showed my interest in joining HEXIS AMR’s structure. We kept in touch over the weeks…

You have only been driving single-seaters until now …

Yes I have, driving a GT is a first for me! This signature is a big shift and symbolizes a challenge to take up. But I’m serene and in good terms with HEXIS AMR: I trust them and they trust me. I had the chance to meet the whole team during a test day in Lédenon (circuit where HEXIS AMR are based), and I visited their structure. I also attended the Paul Ricard test days, where I could see HEXIS AMR’s GT1 run. Today, I’m really proud to be part of the team!

What kind of look do you have on this new FIA GT1 World Championship?

I think this championship has a bright future and that it will certainly become the GTs queen category in the upcoming years. And I count a lot on the success of HEXIS AMR!

Any closing words?

I thank all my partners, the vodka brand White Birch and the watchmaker Horus. And a big thank-you to HEXIS AMR for the trust they give me.

Teixeira is also working closely with his major partners and suppliers to ensure their continued support.

“I shall be meeting all of them personally in the next couple of days. I want them to understand this is a series that is here to stay on the motorsport scene, and they need to know their involvement is with a series that is going from strength to strength.”

The way Teixeira sees the series now is as starting with a totally clean sheet with a re-structuring that has no outstanding issues that can hold back its growth: “We have always put on a fantastic show and this is only going to get better.”

However, he was also realistic about the adverse publicity that the series has received, and was quick to reassure all those involved that many of the stories were very wide of the mark.

“I have seen all the stories written over the past few weeks doubting the future of the series, and these are not new to me as I have seen them at the start of every one of our four seasons. These are not things I like to read and I feel frustrated that I cannot always come out and explain exactly what we are doing, but, as you know, we have always delivered every season and race we have committed to,” he said.

The series has recently announced a new deal with IMG Sports Media to market its worldwide media rights for the next three years and also the Season Five calendar. Teixeira is now working on further deals, and in the coming weeks the grid for the race in Surfers Paradise will be announced after final deals have been put in place.

The one outstanding issue that will be dealt with soon is the liquidation of A1 Grand Prix Operations Limited, that was a subsidiary of A1 Holdings Ltd. Administration for this company has now been applied for and this will be heard on the 6th October.

Teixeira’s message to all of the company’s creditors was: “Our intention is to settle all our outstanding creditors prior to the administration hearing, and would like to thank them for their patience and support.

“We at A1GP have been so lucky to have such loyal support from all our stake holders – management and staff, race promoters, team owners, partners, suppliers, TV rights holders, sponsors and last but not least our fans”.

Clivio Piccione, pilote et directeur de l’A1 Team Monaco, associé à Emanuele Pirro, quintuple vainqueur des 24 heures du Mans, ont dominé les équipes d’Espagne et du Portugal, à l’occasion de l’épreuve de qualification de la Course des Champions (ROC) à Porto. Une victoire qui permet au duo monégasque de se qualifier pour la grande finale de la Coupe des Nations qui aura lieu à Pékin le 3 novembre prochain.

Hier à Porto, Piccione et Pirro sont venus à bout de la paire espagnole composée des pilotes de rallye Carlos Sainz et Dani Sordo. Le suspens aura duré jusqu’au bout, trois manches ayant été nécessaires pour départager les vainqueurs. Et c’est dans un ultime duel que Clivio Piccione est venu à bout de Dani Sordo, pilote Citroën engagé en Championnat du Monde des Rallyes (WRC).

Après la victoire obtenue à l’arrachée, Clivio Piccione s’est montré ravi et satisfait de l’avoir emporté: « Gagner ici est très sympathique parce que nous représentons notre pays, ce que je fais déjà pour Monaco en A1GP. Avec Emanuele, nous avons formé une bonne équipe et je suis content de ramener un trophée supplémentaire pour Monaco. De plus, nous nous sommes qualifiés pour la grande finale qui aura lieu à Pékin en fin d’année, j’ai déjà hâte d’y être, tant l’ambiance de l’épreuve est formidable… »

Coéquipier de Piccione pour l’occasion, Emanuele Pirro est un grand fan de la Course des Champions: « Certes nous avons gagné avec Clivio, mais là encore, le véritable vainqueur du week-end a été la Course des Champions. Cet événement est fantastique, le public a une nouvelle fois apprécié. Se confronter l’espace d’un week-end, à d’autres pilotes venus de disciplines différentes, et ce sur différents types de voitures, est toujours un vrai plaisir. L’ambiance dans un stade comble est vraiment très particulière, unique je dirais. Nous être qualifié pour la grande finale de Pékin a été un grand moment… »

La victoire n’a pas été facile ! Pour Monaco, il a déjà fallu venir à bout du tandem portugais en demi-finale, composé de Armindo Araujo et Filipe Albuquerque, concurrent en A1GP de Clivio Piccione. Et c’est en 5 « sets » que l’équipe de Monaco s’est imposée face à celle du pays organisateur, notamment dans un cinquième et magistral dernier face à face entre Piccione et Albuquerque pour la gagne. A l’arrivée, le Monégasque va l’emporter pour moins de dix millièmes de seconde, le stade de Porto en tremble encore ! C’est aussi le plus infime écart de toute l’histoire de la Course des champions…

Malgré l’élimination de leurs héros en demi-finale, la foule rassemblée dans le stadium « Do Dragão » du FC Porto est tout de même restée de bonne humeur pour encourager et applaudir Monaco face à l’Espagne pour la grande finale du week-end. Organisateur de la Course des Champions, Fredrik Johnsson s’est montré satisfait de la façon dont la toute première finale régionale a été accueillie: « Nous sommes face à une demande de plus en plus croissante de places en provenance de pays pour notre grande finale annuelle, nous étions dans l’obligation d’organiser des épreuves de sélection. Notre souhait désormais est de pouvoir, à l’avenir, mettre en place plusieurs finales régionales à travers le monde… »

Endurance racer Pirro, a twenty-two year resident of Monaco, and Piccione, the twenty five year old Monegasque racer, created a formidable pairing which beat the Spanish WRC duo of Carlos Sainz and Daniel Sordo by three heats to one in the best-of-five final, with Sordo winning Spain’s only heat and Piccione presiding in both his head-to-heads.

After the victory, Piccione was thrilled : ‘It was very important to win here because we are representing our country, which I already do for Monaco in the A1 Grand Prix. I’m very proud of that, and as well as that, this time we will come back home with a trophy!…and we are going to Chinaaaaa!”

Piccione’s team-mate, Emanuele Pirro is a big fan of the Race of Champions concept : “ Ok we won with Clivio Piccione, but again the real winner of the weekend was the Race of Champions. It is so fantastic to be so close to the public, to be all weekend long with other drivers who compete during the season in other categories… I think it was a great pleasure for the thousands of people who came here to see us racing, but it is also the case for us drivers, because here in the Race of Champions there is a very particular ambiance and we really have a lot of fun. Also, winning ROC South Europe and being qualified for the International Race Of Champions in Beijing is such a big moment !”

Despite the comfortable margin of their victory in the final, it was by a hair’s breadth that Monaco had prevailed over the Portuguese pairing of Production WRC leader, Armindo Araujo and A1GP racer, Filipe Albuquerque in the semi-final. In the best of five heat contest, it was beautifully poised at 2-2 before Piccione beat his fellow A1GP racer, Albuquerque by one ten thousandth of a second, the narrowest margin of victory in Race of Champions history, in the deciding heat to see Monaco through.

Spain had earlier beaten the Italian pairing of Miki Biasion and Gigi Galli by three heats to nil in the other semi-final.

Despite the elimination of their local heroes in the semi-finals, the crowd gathered at FC Porto’s Estádio do Dragão remained in good spirits to cheer along the Spain v Monaco challenge. Race of Champions founder, Fredrik Johnsson was delighted by how the first-ever regional final had been received: ‘We are experiencing an ever-increasing demand for places from countries at our annual Grand Final. It is our intention that this becomes the first of several regional finals around the world in years to come.

Monaco, 12 May 2009:

You started from scratch and took up the challenge; is that a victory in itself? 

CP: I wouldn’t quite go that far, but I would say that it is the culmination of a project, with all the complexity, the doubts and the risks that that involves. Even though it was not always easy, we followed through and ended up proving that A1 Team Monaco belongs at this level of the competition. I was really proud to represent my country in the World Cup of Motorsport. 

How would you sum up your results for the 2008/09 season?

CP: Our goal was to finish in the top ten in our first season and we achieved that. We missed a few opportunities to make it on to the podium, particularly in Portugal and possibly at Brands Hatch, which means that we would have been capable of doing even better. The team kept improving as the season went along and the operation of our car was one of our strong points. Starting from nothing and ending up doing so well in such a short time [just eight months] was not exactly a piece of cake. The whole team worked very hard and I want to thank everybody, including our team manager Graham Taylor, whose experience got us off to a fast start and enabled us to react effectively in a lot of situations.  

What is your best memory?

CP: Kyalami in South Africa was definitely the most memorable event because we earned pole position in the qualifiers and got a place on the podium in the Feature race. After spending the first four races on a learning curve that was the point in the season when we really turned a corner and since then we were amongst the frontrunners.

Do you have any regrets?

CP: At Brands Hatch and Portimão, the two events after Kyalami, we could have repeated the performance we gave in South Africa. In Portugal I was fifth in the main race when the US and Italian teams held on in front of me and the Italian car, driven by Liuzzi, cut off my momentum. It was disappointing not to score any points and not to have demonstrated our full potential. It was very frustrating at the time to end the weekend like that, when the podium had been within our reach, but the main thing is that we displayed our performance on the track. Then at Brands, in the last race of the season, the start was good but not perfect. I was powerless against the Irish team, which took the lead right from the start. Initially I was able to keep up the pace, but it’s just too bad that we took too long over our first pit stop. That was what lost us any chance of making it to the podium. Overtaking is very tricky on that track, so first I had to put up with driving in the wake of the Portuguese car and then the Swiss one after our second pit stop. It’s a bit disappointing to finish just off the podium, right behind number three. It’s well known that Brands Hatch is a hard place to overtake, so mistakes are very costly there.

In what areas would you like to see some improvement?

CP: In future we must perform better during pit stops. We lost some crucial points that way this season and we absolutely must do better. We have already improved in that area, but not enough to catch up with the top teams. 

Has a second season for A1 Team Monaco been confirmed?

CP: Every day since the last race at Brands Hatch early in May, I have been devoting my time to my role as team leader. My associate Hubertus Bahlsen and I have been negotiating with potential partners and attending one meeting after another. I hope we will be able to raise enough funds to participate in the 2009/10 season which starts in late September in Surfer’s Paradise, Australia.

L’A1 Team Monaco dans la cour des grands !

Au terme d’une toute première saison dans la discipline, l’A1 Team Monaco et son pilote Clivio Piccione décrochent la 9^e place du championnat avec 35 points, à une unité seulement de la 7^e position ! Course après course, l’équipe monégasque n’a cessé de progresser et a surtout démontré tout son potentiel, rivalisant avec des structures bien plus capées et expérimentées. Retour avec Clivio Piccione sur cette aventure passionnante, dont le lancement officiel en présence de SAS le Prince Albert II, rappelons-le, a eu lieu à Monaco le 25 septembre dernier, soit une dizaine de jours seulement avant la première épreuve de Zandvoort aux Pays-Bas !

Etre parti d’une feuille blanche et d’avoir relevé le défi, est-ce déjà une victoire ?

Sans aller jusque-là, je dirais que c’est l’aboutissement d’un projet avant tout, avec la complexité, les incertitudes et les risques que cela comporte ! Même si cela n’a pas été évident tous les jours, nous sommes allés au bout des choses et avons prouvé que l’A1 Team Monaco avait sa place à ce niveau de la compétition. Représenter mon pays au sein de la Coupe du Monde du Sport Automobile a été une véritable fierté. 

Quel bilan peut-on tirer de votre saison 2008/09 ?

Notre objectif était de terminer dans le Top 10 à la fin de notre première saison et nous l’avons réalisé. Quelques occasions manquées, de podium notamment au Portugal ou encore en Angleterre, signifient qu’une meilleure position était à notre portée. L’équipe s’est améliorée tout au long de la saison, et l’exploitation de notre monoplace a été l’un de nos points forts. Etre parti de zéro et parvenir à ces résultats dans un court délai de seulement huit mois n’a pas été évident. Le travail fourni par toute l’équipe a été sans reproche et je tiens à remercier tout le monde, sans oublier Graham Taylor, notre Team Manager dont l’expérience nous a permis de nous mettre en action très rapidement et à être réactifs dans bien des situations.

Quel est votre meilleur souvenir ?

L’Afrique du Sud à Kyalami restera sans aucun doute l’épreuve qui a marqué les esprits, où nous avons décroché la pole position en qualifications et obtenu le podium dans la course « Principale ». Après les quatre premières courses pour « apprendre », nous avons franchi un véritable cap à cet instant de la saison et avons depuis joué aux avants postes. 

Avez-vous quelques regrets ?

A Portimão ou Brands Hatch, les deux épreuves qui ont suivi Kyalami, nous étions en mesure de rééditer notre performance sud-africaine. Au Portugal, j’étais 5^e de la course « Principale » lorsque les équipes des Etats-Unis et de l’Italie se sont accrochées devant moi, et que la monoplace italienne, avec Liuzzi aux commandes, est venu me faucher dans mon élan. C’est décevant de ne pas avoir marqué de points et surtout de ne pas avoir pu démontrer tout notre potentiel. Avoir terminé le week-end de cette manière, alors que le podium était à notre portée, a sur le moment été certes frustrant, mais l’essentiel était d’avoir affiché notre performance en piste. Puis en Angleterre, le départ de cette dernière course de la saison a été bon, mais pas parfait. Je n’ai rien pu faire face à l’équipe d’Irlande qui d’entrée s’est installée en tête. J’ai été en mesure de suivre son rythme dès le départ, dommage qu’ensuite nous ayons laissé filer trop de temps lors de notre premier arrêt aux stands. C’est à cet instant que nous avons perdu toute chance de monter sur le podium. Sur ce circuit où toute manœuvre de dépassement est délicate, j’ai dû composer dans le sillage du Portugal d’abord, puis de la Suisse après notre second arrêt aux stands. Terminer au pied du podium, dans le sillage du 3^e, est un peu décevant. Brands Hatch – et nous le savions – n’autorise que très peu de dépassements, raison pour laquelle l’erreur se paye encore plus cher qu’ailleurs !

Quels sont les axes de développement ?

A l’avenir, nous devrons être encore plus performants dans les phases d’arrêt aux stands. Cet exercice nous a fait perdre des points importants cette année et nous devons à tout prix nous améliorer. Nous avons déjà passé un cap en ce domaine mais pas suffisamment pour faire la différence avec les meilleures équipes.

Une saison 2 pour l’A1 Team Monaco est-elle confirmée ?

Depuis la dernière épreuve de Brands Hatch début mai, je me consacre au quotidien à mon rôle de patron d ’équipe. Avec Hubertus Bahlsen, mon associé, nous sommes en négociation avec des partenaires potentiels et enchaînons les rendez-vous. J’espère que nous serons en mesure de réunir les fonds nécessaires de manière à prendre part au championnat 2009/10 qui débutera fin septembre en Australie à Surfers Paradise…

Monaco, le 12 mai 2009

Clivio Piccione started the morning’s 18-laps Sprint race from 14th place on the grid. After the usual first corner battle for racing position, Clivio slipped down a couple of places and his race was to prove short lived from there. As Clivio made his way down the pitlane from the team’s mandatory pitstop on lap 8 the car was stopped at the end of pitlane with a bodywork fire which ended Team Monaco’s Sprint race.

?It was an action packed 50-laps Feature race this afternoon with Clivio starting alongside pole-sitter and championship contenders team Ireland. The safety car was deployed immediately after an incident at turn one on lap one between teams India, USA and China. When it returned to the pits on lap five Clivio was hot on the tail of Ireland up until the Irish team made its first mandatory pitstop. From leading the race Monaco made a longer than anticipated pitstop two laps later, which meant that Clivio rejoined the race in fifth position. With pace in the car but nowhere for Clivio to overtake, the order of the race remained the same until the second mandatory pitstop window opened with 21 laps remaining. Monaco made its last stop immediately, overtook team Portugal and was running in fourth place after all the cars had pitted. With six of his eight PowerBoost’s remaining, Clivio pushed team Switzerland hard, but again with fast laps times and pace in the car he was unable to pass the third placed team all the way to the chequered flag due to the tight configuration and narrow Brands Hatch track.

?Clivio Piccione, Driver and Seat Holder: “The start of the last race was good, but not perfect. I could not get in front of Ireland at turn one and as we both pulled away I was catching up to them in the first stint. Everything was feeling good and we had good lap times, but the first stop was too long. I believe this is where we lost out on a podium finish. I was playing catch up after that. I had to follow Portugal who was slower than our car and I could not go anywhere. The second stop was okay, we managed to pass Portugal, but after that I was playing catch up with Switzerland and we were quicker than them too. We ended in fourth place, which is a bit disappointing, as there was no opportunity to overtake, but that’s the way it is at Brands Hatch. Our final championship position is a good result. We were hoping to be in the top ten at the end of our first season and we have achieved that, although a couple of missed podium opportunities at the last round and here today meant that a better position was within our grasp. The team improved throughout the season and our car was one of the strongest. To put the team together and to produce these results within eight months is a pretty good job, so now we shall focus on getting everything together for next season. I would like to thank the whole team for their hard work this year.”??Graham Taylor, Team Principal: “It has been a long journey in a short period of time. I would like to thank everybody involved with the A1 Team Monaco project – all their hard work, dedication, motivation and abilities – for bringing us to this position at the end of our first season. Clivio Piccione termine la dernière épreuve « Principale » de la Coupe du Monde A1GP 2008/09 à la 4e place, au terme d’une bagarre de toute beauté avec l’équipe de Suisse championne en titre. L’A1 Team Monaco se classe 9e du championnat avec 35 points, a une unité seulement de la 7e position !

De ce dernier rendez-vous de la saison, Clivio Piccione en avait fait son principal objectif ! Les performances affichées par l’A1 Team Monaco au cours des dernières épreuves le laissaient entrevoir. Oublié l’abandon de cette course « Sprint » matinale programmée sur 18 tours et dont il n’en couvrira que 8, suite à un début d’incendie au niveau du capot moteur, le jeune pilote monégasque s’élançait pour l’épreuve « Principale » de l’après-midi avec un moral au beau fixe, comme la météo d’ailleurs qui a régné depuis trois jours sur le circuit du Kent. Installé sur la première ligne de la grille de départ, aux côtés de l’équipe d’Irlande prétendante au titre, Clivio ne manquait en aucun cas son envol de cette épreuve de 50 tours, en se positionnant d’entrée dans le sillage de l’homme de tête Irlandais. Suite à un incident au premier virage entre les équipes de l’Inde, des USA et de la Chine, la voiture de sécurité va faire son apparition pendant 5 tours. Viendra ensuite la première vague d’arrêts obligatoires aux stands pour changer de pneumatiques, Monaco passant en tête pendant deux tours devant l’Irlande, première à s’arrêter. Le premier arrêt de l’équipe monégasque ne se passera pas comme prévu et Clivio Piccione rejoindra la course en 5e position. Et sur ce circuit où il est quasiment impossible de dépasser, Clivio va continuer de maintenir la pression sur les adversaires le devançant, à commencer par le Portugal. A 21 tours de l’arrivée, au bénéfice du second arrêt obligatoire aux stands, Monaco va gagner une place et s’installer en 4e position, dans le sillage de l’équipe de Suisse championne en titre. Mais jamais Clivio ne parviendra à trouver l’ouverture, malgré une attaque de tous les instants, et terminera dans les échappements de l’équipe Helvétique. Au pied du podium malheureusement, qui restait l’objectif avoué de l’A1 Team Monaco pour cette ultime manche du Championnat. A l’heure du bilan, au terme d’une toute première saison de participation en A1GP, Monaco pointe à la 9e place du classement général final avec 35 points, après 14 courses disputées. La nouvelle venue dans la discipline aura obtenu des résultats plus qu’encourageants, avec notamment une pole position, un podium, et 7 places dans le Top 10…

Clivio Piccione – Pilote : « Le départ de cette dernière course de la saison a été bon, mais pas parfait. Je n’ai rien pu faire face à l’équipe d’Irlande qui d’entrée s’est installée en tête. J’ai été en mesure de suivre son rythme dès le départ, dommage qu’ensuite nous ayons laissé filer trop de temps lors de notre premier arrêt aux stands. C’est à cet instant que nous avons perdu toute chance de monter sur le podium. Sur ce circuit ou toute manœuvre de dépassement est délicate, j’ai dû composer dans le sillage du Portugal d’abord, puis de la Suisse après notre second arrêt aux stands. Terminer au pied du podium, dans le sillage du 3e, est un peu décevant. Brands Hatch – et nous le savions – n’autorise que très peu de dépassements, raison pour laquelle l’erreur se paye encore plus cher qu’ailleurs !
Notre position finale au championnat est un bon résultat. Notre objectif était de pointer dans le top 10 à la fin de notre première saison, nous l’avons réalisé. Quelques occasions manquées, de podium notamment au Portugal ou encore aujourd’hui, signifie qu’une meilleure position était à notre portée. L’équipe s’est améliorée tout au long de la saison et l’exploitation de notre monoplace a été l’un des points forts. Etre parti de zéro et parvenir à ces résultats dans un court délai de seulement huit mois n’a pas été évident, mais le travail fourni par tous a été sans reproche. Il nous faut maintenant continuer de travailler et surtout nous concentrer pour aborder sereinement la prochaine saison. Je tiens à remercier toute l’équipe pour le travail effectué cette année…»

Nous sommes évidemment tous déçus de ne pas être sur le podium aujourd’hui pour cette ultime course du championnat. Clivio Piccione et Hubertus Bahlsen ont créé un projet d’envergure mondiale, je suis impatient de les aider à apporter plus de succès encore à A1 Team Monaco dans les prochaines semaines… »

Brands Hatch, 2 May 2009: A1 Team Monaco’s Clivio Piccione will start in second position for the Feature event and from the seventh row of the grid for the Sprint race – the final rounds of the 2008/9 A1GP World Cup of Motorsport at Brands Hatch tomorrow. 

Clivio made an immediate impact on the time sheet when he ventured out on track in the opening minutes of this morning’s Official Practice 3. In the early stages of the sixty-minute session current circuit best lap time setters team Netherlands set the bench mark of running in the 1:12’s. Clivio sat in P3, only 0.4 seconds off the leaders pace, for the first half of the session. A further push improved his time to 1:13.039, however this now only secured Clivio fifth place. With only 15 minutes left on the clock a Red Flag situation suspended running for several minutes. When the session re-started a further Red Flag was immediately deployed and the decision was made to conclude running. Clivio was therefore unable to improve on his time and ended the session in fifth position overall.

In the afternoon the complete field of 20 teams waited in the pits until the closing stint of Sprint Qualifying 1. With the exception of Germany, everyone timed their last minute outing to ensure that they took the chequered flag.  Clivio crossed the line in a respectable 8th position with a 1:13.507. In SQ2 the Monegasque squad sent Clivio on to a clear track with over four minutes remaining. Clivio started his hot lap with a stunning first sector time, but unfortunately ran wide as he pushed the car to the limit, costing him valuable time. Whilst the top of the time sheet scored in the 1:11’s, Clivio set a fastest lap time of 1:13.260 to put him in 14th position for tomorrow’s Sprint race.

Clivio set his best time of the weekend so far – a 1:12.113 – to sit in third position at the end of Feature Qualifying 1. When the final qualifying segment got underway he utilised the PowerBoost button, setting a fastest lap time of 1:11.085 to sit in provisional pole. Championship contenders Switzerland and Ireland waited until the last possible moment before leaving the pitlane to chase Monaco’s fantastic time. In an exciting climax to the final Saturday session of the season it was Ireland who snatched the double-pole, with Team Monaco lining up alongside them on the first row of the grid, in second position for the start of the A1GP Brands Hatch feature event tomorrow. 

Clivio Piccione, Driver and Seat Holder: “We are disappointed in the qualifying for the Sprint race as we struggled with a gearbox issue in both the runs. We had a look at the data and I changed my driving style for the problem corners and the changes worked. In the first feature qualifying session we used old tyres and went considerably quicker, so that was encouraging. We knew that we were quick from our times in practice, so we knew that we could achieve the time we needed to. In the last session I used the push-to-pass early and the lap was pretty good. To be on the front row of the grid with the championship contenders for the last race of year feels great.”

The boys worked extremely hard to get the car on to the circuit and the performance of our driver put paid to their efforts.  We are now looking forward to ending our inaugural season on a very high note.”
