August 16 th, 17 th, 18 th, 19 th the historic Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium hosted the fifth round of the 2007 World Series by Renault Championship.
Thursday, Free Practice
The race weekend started well for Monegasque driver Clivio Piccione by setting competitive and consistent lap times during free practice, having found a good set up for his car. Throughout the whole session Clivio was running 7 th / 8 th out of the 30 competitors. Towards the end of the session with 20 minutes remaining Clivio set the 2 nd fastest time with new tyres, giving him hope for a strong weekend.
Friday, Qualifying – Group B
“After free practice yesterday I have great confidence for this weekend, I feel I can finally show what I can do with this car in this championship, the season so far has been extremely frustrating.” Said Clivio. With a full dry track Clivio again set the 2 nd best qualifying time within his group which would place him in 3 rd position for race 1. “With a full dry track the car was working perfectly, we are 5 hundredths behind pole and over half a second quicker than the third car in our group, I am looking forward to the race.”
Saturday, Race 1
From third position Clivio made a poor start and was in 6 th place by the first corner. “It was just one of those things, I was in a good position and my start was not great, I went down to 6 th place but by the end of the first lap I was back up to 4 th and after lap two I was up to third, “commented Clivio, “within six laps I was in 2 nd and then I came in for my pit stop, the team did a great job to get me out again in 4 seconds but I went straight back out into traffic and I lost about 4 and a half seconds to Parente who was leading. I managed to clear the traffic and close down the gap to Parente by 4 tenths a lap, getting the gap down to 2 seconds. Then my luck changed, as it always seems to do, with 300 metres to go before the chequered flag my fuel pump broke going through the last corner/chicane……race over”.
Sunday, Race 2
“Due to the fuel pump failure at the end of race one I started the second race from 19 th. In reverse of yesterday I made a great start moving up to 13 th by the end of lap one and then 12 th by the end of lap two. My car felt great and I could overtake quite easily, within a number of laps I was attacked 8 th position, finally overtaking him at the last chicane, however, after I got past he clipped and punctured my left rear tyre with his front wing which meant I had to pit stop.” Continued Clivio, “In the pit I had to use my old tyre from Saturday’s race which did not give me much confidence, but when I went out again I could drive the car with ease and I was lapping 1.5 seconds a lap quicker than the top 6 drivers, I rejoined the race in 18 th place on lap 16, 37 seconds behind 17 th, and managed to finish 16 th setting the fastest lap of the race on lap 14.”
”I was in eight place when I was hit, with the pace I had in the car and within myself I just think what could have been this weekend.” Said Clivio, “I had a quick car and as always my luck was just not with me this weekend. I hope that changes in Donington.”
Clivio’s next race will be at the Donington Park circuit in the United Kingdom on the weekend of 9 th September, 2007.
