May 4 th, 5 th, 6 th, Nurburgring in Germany hosted the second round of the 2007 World Series by Renault Championship, the scene of his first GP2 victory in 2005.
Free Practice, 4 th May
Clivio and the team decided to start free practice with the setup they used at the recent Magny-Cours test, going a different path to that of his team mate. This unfortunately did not work in favour of Clivio as he ended the first session 15 th and the second session 21 st. “This is what testing is all about, you have to try different things and unfortunately it was not the right direction for me. It could have worked well but we have a good setup from the early test we did here a few months ago.” Said Clivio.
Qualifying 5 th May
The team changed the whole setup of Clivio’s car for qualifying, back to the setup of the Nurburgring test in March. This meant Clivio went straight into qualifying with a car not fully tuned into the current track conditions, however, he qualified his car in 6 th position, “I could have had the quickest time in my group and scored pole but on my fastest lap I had to back off due to yellow flags. “ continued Clivio, “I have a good car for the race, again it was just luck that prevented me from scoring pole position.”
Race 1, 5 th May
From 6 th position Clivio made a good start and by the end of the long run into the first corner he was up in to fourth position, however by mid corner Michael Aleshin had spun in front of him. Clivio managed to miss Aleshin by driving round behind him, however, momentum forced Aleshin’s car and also Salvador Duran’s car to run into the back of Clivio’s car destroying the whole rear suspension. Clivio’s race ended in the gravel trap and left him thinking when his luck was going to change.
Race 2, 6 th May
Due to his early exit of race one, Clivio started the second race in 29 th position with a car that was less than perfect. Due to the damage sustained in the race one incident the team had to replace the whole of the rear end including the gearbox. “Again the team have worked really hard for me to get my car ready to race.” Said Clivio, “they did a great job but it was not as good as it was for the first race, I had really bad under steer and the car was just very difficult to drive. “
Halfway through the race the team and Clivio decided to race for the fastest lap and gain some valuable points, continued Clivio, “I came into the pits about halfway through the race, the team put new tyres on my car and I went for the fastest lap point. The car was not perfect but I did the best I could do.” Clivio had the fastest lap until the last lap of the race when even this credit was taken from him. “Again it has been a tough, frustrating weekend for me and the team. We know we have the speed and consistency within the car and my self. We are just having too much bad luck at the moment. The next race is my home race so I am looking forward to that, it is the perfect starting point for my season!”.
Clivio’s next race will be at his home in Monaco on the weekend of the 27th May, 2007.
